College of Earth and Planetary Sciences (CEPS), University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), was founded in September 2002, on the basis of former Division of Earth Science Education at UCAS.
CEPS is a national education and research center on geosciences. The teaching and research body of CEPS consists of over 300 full-time and part-time faculty members invited from related institutes. Currently more than 50 full-time faculties teach and conduct research at CEPS; the research field covers a board range of subdisciplines of geosciences including geology, geophysics, marine and atmosphere sciences, geological resources and geological engineering, and geodesy.
CEPS currently has over 800 graduate students from 24 institutions, including CAS, China Earthquake Administration, China Meteorological Administration, State Oceanic Administration, State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, and other institutes. CEPS offers distinct programs with an interdisciplinary approach, focusing on geophysics, atmosphere science, geology, oceanography, civil engineering, geological resources and geological engineering, geodesy, surveying and mapping, while requiring all students to be trained in a specific area of focus.
In 2010, the key laboratory of computational geodynamics of CAS was created and originally called the key laboratory of computational geodynamics of GUCAS which was jointly set up by CAS and Peking University as the nation’s first institution capable of conferring Ph. D degrees in this field. The lab is devoted to computational geodynamics, including geodynamics, physics of the Earth's interior, seismology, remote sensing applications, and geotectonic physics, etc.
CEPS conducts actively multilateral and bilateral cooperation with international organizations, countries and regions. CEPS has been in bilateral cooperation and exchanges with University of Minnesota, École Normale Supérieure of Paris, the University of Tokyo, University of Missouri, etc. CEPS has invited over 50 overseas professors to give lectures on the frontiers of related subjects and held several international workshops in the field of computational geodynamics and inter-disciplines.
